Fox Priest, Fr. Jonathan Morris Thinks Obama Is A Godless Heathen

Roger Ailes and the Christian right are very concerned about so called attempts to drive religion out of our “Christian Nation” by the forces of secular darkness. Chief among these forces, according to those who actually believe that there is a “war on Christians,” is our Commander-in-Chief whose Christianity, along with his birth certificate, is suspect and very, very troubling. To provide an “imprimatur” for this meme, Roger Ailes has enlisted a “man of the cloth,” Catholic priest Father Jonathan Morris who plays to a gullible Catholic audience who believe that “father knows best.” Morris has gone from servicing the disgraced founder of the “Legion of Christ” to supplicating before the altar of Ailes for whom Morris’ continued presence, including a weekly Fox Friends appearance on “The Lord’s Day,” is a win-win. Not only does Morris validate right wing talking points; but he’s doing a little informal political campaigning in order to dissuade Catholics voters from voting for Obama who is not exactly beloved by the very powerful American bishops. In advancing the Fox “controversy” about Obama not having selected a church, Morris has already impugned the president. Yesterday, he was back on his Sunday gig doing the same thing and in so doing providing validation for all those “Christians” who have their nice, clean panties in a bunch because the president did not mention “God” during his Thanksgiving address. Jesus is weeping. I guess in addition to being “Commander-in-Chief,” Obama is supposed to be pastor-in-chief?
Clayton Morris set forth the “controversy” in his opening statement that President Obama “ruffled quite a few feathers” on Thanksgiving because he didn’t (OMG) mention “God” during his Thanksgiving address. He played a portion of the address in which Obama talked about “pioneers and patriots” who faced “impossible odds.” (So far, so good) But as he spoke the chyron set the Fox “persecuted Christian” message: “God Gets Left Out of the Address, President Angers Some w/Thanksgiving Remarks.” (Some of the “some” being that great Fox Christian Eric Bolling and, not surprisingly uber Christian culture clubber Todd Starnes. Alysin Camerota wanted to know if this was “a religious slight or an oversight.” (A religious slight, right?). She introduced Fox’s one true clergyperson, Catholic priest Father Jonathan Morris.
Camerota did note that “God” was mentioned in Obama’s this year’s proclamation and in past addresses and that critics should be fair. As she spoke, the chyron furthered the persecuted Christian agitprop: “God Gets Left Out of Address, President Angers Some w/Thanksgiving Remarks.” Fr. Morris referenced other recent presidents who “left out God” in some of their addresses. But then he talked about the difference between these Thanksgiving Proclamations and the original. The godly agitprop continued with this chyron: “Giving Thanks to God Left Out of President’s Address.” With his best jazz hands he whined about how “shocking” the contrasts are. The little propaganda prelate then got all “sotto voce” as he dramatically cited the part of Obama’s address where he said that he would be spending part of Thanksgiving “reflecting on how lucky we are” – a phrase that must constitute a most grievous sin in Fr. Morris’ prayer book because he said “how lucky we are, when you are addressing the nation. It’s taking time to reflect about the wonderful blessings that God has given to us.” So after insinuating that Obama is a godless heathen, Fr. Morris then says that if this is what Obama believes, “that’s fine but we have to recognize that we’re electing a person with a set of values that is going to communicate to the country about those values and I think the contrast is quite sharp.’ Translation – Obama doesn’t share your “Christian” “values”
The topic turned to the new prayers in the Catholic Mass which is really exciting stuff for all you pre-Vatican II fans.
Comment: While Clayton Morris and Alysin Camerota were professional and didn’t provide the gushing ass (or ring?) kissing validation that the first string “friends” would have, it was clear that the holy father was given a nice, comfortable pulpit from which to preach the right wing gospel of de-legitimizing Obama by portraying him as out of the mainstream or, as Morris once suggested, untrustworthy. So he didn’t mention a deity. So what! There are probably many Americans who aren’t exactly shouting hosanna in the highest about their economic situation. But these right wingers are so desperate to denigrate Obama that they’re going after an omission of “God” in a Thanksgiving Address? Seriously? If life is about personal responsibility, what’s God have to do with it? Maybe Obama can fake religiosity like the non-religious St. Ronald Reagan. But stop the crying, Jesus, Fox News and Fr. Jonathan Morris have yer back!
