Faith carries Marian Central’s Class of 2012

WOODSTOCK – The 2012 Marian Central Catholic High School graduates are family, co-valedictorian Amanda Salvi said. Clich, but true, she told the 168 graduates seated in the gymnasium Friday night.

“Marian is often described as being like a family. The students all know each other here and grow extremely close,” Salvi said. “Even greater, it’s a Catholic family.”

With pastors from local parishes seated around the podium, and Bishop of Rockford David Malloy presenting diplomas and reading the Benediction, the graduates came together one last time as a family.

“Take this Catholic education, this Catholic faith, with you,” Salvi said. “This faith is your greatest asset through all of your ups and downs in life.”

She encouraged continued effort at the school to ensure future graduates have an even better experience.

“Their children should graduate even more faithful, more educated and even more amazing,” Salvi said.

Among the graduates are 36 Illinois State Scholars and six National Merit Finalists, the most in the school’s history, Superintendent Thomas Landers told the graduates and their guests in the school’s 53rd annual commencement ceremony.

“It is your responsibility to continue to use those gifts and talents God has given you,” he told the graduates. “Jesus Christ is with each of you as you exit these doors tonight and will remain with you.”

Marian Central has given each graduate the fundamentals they need to continue to succeed, co-valedictorian Michael Fitzpatrick said.

“We can never change the fundamentals of who we are,” Fitzpatrick said. “This school is truly a special place. Commitment to future success has been the ever-present rhythm. We will remember the nurturing, faith-filled environment of Marian that allowed us to grow.”
